Am I a Candidate?

Though final determination will be made by your physician, to be a candidate for weight loss surgery requires two components. First you must qualify based on BMI calculation and second, you must be a motivated patient who is ready to change their lifestyle for the better and commit to a healthy way of life.  The combination of surgery and a motivated patient will lead to unbelievable results!

Surgery is an option for patients with severe obesity (BMI  equal to or greater than 40 kg/m² or BMI equal to or greater than  35 kg/m² with significant medical risk factors). Prior to using that option, other non-invasive methods of treatment must have been tried without success. To find out if you are a canidate for surgery use our BMI calcualtor below.

Body mass index (BMI) is a statistical measure of body fat based upon the height and weight of adults, 20 years and older.

To compute your BMI, enter your height and weight then click the “Compute BMI” button.

      BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight = 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
  • Morbid Obesity=BMI of 40 or greater
  • Super Obesity=BMI of 50 or greater

Obesity: Your BMI is 30 or above, indicating your weight is in the obese category for adults of your height.

People who are overweight or obese are at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol and sleep apnea. At a minimum, anyone who is obese should try to avoid gaining additional weight. In addition, anyone who is obese should try to lose weight. Even a small weight loss (just 10% of your current weight) may help lower the risk of disease.  If you BMI is >35 you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine appropriate ways to lose weight.
